Great story. I don't find too many set in <a href="http://talkstates.com/forum/alabama/" title="Alabama" rel="nofollow">Alabama</a>. It would probably make a good movie.

I've only begun to read Smonk, but the story means more since it is set in the area in which I was born and raised. Like his other books, Poachers and Hell at the Breech, Smonk takes me back to Clarke County, AL on a mental quest, imagining the area during this period of time. The county remains full of southern flavor with a hint of modernization. Franklin's ability to paint mental pictures with his writing is outstanding. If you choose to read one of his past novels, pick up Hell at the Breech. Then do some research on the often unknown issue called the Mitcham War which took place in Clarke County. Absolutely fascinating.
